Learning Objectives

At the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the indications for using non-invasive respiratory interventions namely bubble continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in the care of premature and sick term infants.
  • Identify clinical outcomes associated with the use of CPAP.
  • Learn how to initiate and maintain an infant on CPAP.
  • Define the complications and technical difficulties in administering CPAP.
  • Troubleshoot problems associated with CPAP administration.
  • Discuss other aspects of neonatal care integral to the success of CPAP such as feeding, management of other complications such as pneumothorax, patent ductus arteriosus or anemia, extra
  • Discuss role of inhaled surfactant in the success of CPAP in selected group of patients and understand non-invasive techniques available to administer surfactant without endotracheal intubation.
